Montreal director Yung Chang is at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, along with a gang from film production house EyeSteelFilm that includes  Peter Wintonik, Daniel Cross and Mila Aung-Thwin.  Boxing coach Qi Moxiang, one of the main participants in Chang’s documentary, China Heavyweight, is there, too.

China Heavyweight follows young men and women who are training as boxers in the hope of escaping a life of poverty and boredom in China’s hinterland.

In an interview with the newspaper the Park Record, of Park City Utah, Chang said, “There is something significant with this film,” Chang said. “. . . it is cliché, but boxing is a metaphor for life. This film is a close-up look at the way the country is working and the current inner workings of the society in China.”

There’s a CBC radio interview with Yung Chang here.

(His part starts about 11 minutes in.  The interview begins with Winnipeg filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot, who talk about their film Indie Game: The Movie.)
